February 22, 2015 "Transfers to Puenta Arenas, Brush Fires and Pichanga's!"

*Wednesday, February 24th, Elder Hughes flew from Puerto Monte to Puenta Arenas to transfer to serve in  another area of Chile.  Elder Hughes', flight was about 2 1/2 hours and he is now in the southern most region of the world.  Summer is turning into fall right now and the biggest challenges with this region are the wind and the lack of ozone layers.  Ropes are strung from building to building to prevent people from being blown away.  Elder Hughes is excited to be heading south and his new companion will be his first non-American companion, he is from Argentina.  Elder Hughes told us this week that the best thing he ate was the pachanga and he sleeps really well with the bedding provided, but he is glad he took a cold weather sleeping bag to Chile, because he is going to need it!

"  These are a few pics of the fire after it was out. It was right behind the houses. It was a miracle that it didnt burn them."
"So we bought something called a pichanga Tuesday night. It is fries with sausage, cheese,  tomatos, pickles, and other stuff. It was really good!!!

First off, congrats to Hailey for her call. That is so awesome and I am excited for her. Well.. this week is cambios and we recieved big news for this cambio.. in Rio Negro, there are 2 companionships of Elders. But they are going to take all four of us out and replace us with 2 Hermanas (sister missionaries)... now Rio Negro will be one sector.... so most of this week we have been getting the place ready for the hermanas to come. They will do well. The hermanas are the secret weapons for the church(that is what Elder Nielson said when he came down). And it is true.. I am going to go to Punta Arenas (the bottom of the world) and just as winter is starting..... I am going to freeze!!) My new companion is from Argentina.. So I will be able to get better with my spanish.. I leave wensday and will fly down to Puenta Arenas.. Elder Winward is also going to Punta Arenas as well.  I am excited for that as well. I will miss Rio Negro though, even though it was hard, I learned a lot.. Also there are a lot of members who I will miss too. But it is part of the mission life..
So Monday , there was a wildfire in Rio Negro.. Luckily only two houses burned down.... it is a miracle that more didnt start on fire. There were ashes of burnt grass all over the town... but no one got hurt and everyone is alright..
Saturday we did divisions with the members (where one missionary leaves with one member to visit in active members).. It was good and we were able to bring the Spirit into the home of the family that we visited. They said they would come to church, but they didnt show up.. sad day... but other families came back who the others had visited, so it was good. Sunday we went to Osorno and did the same thing for another ward (they needed more missionaries to go with members so they had us come).. It was awesome as well.
So this week I studied a lot about using the Book of Mormon and Chapter 5 from PMG.  We know that the book of mormon is the keystone of the church.. and it is the keystone in three ways:
1. For our witness of Christ 2. For the FULNESS of the doctrine. 3. And for the foundation of our testimonies... i love reading the Book of Mormon.. everytime I read, I forget about the problems I have and I can focus on the hope and peace that I feel when I read. I know that the Book of Mormon is another testament of Christ and is not here to replace the Bible, but to support it and to add another testimony of Christ. I know that if we read it EVERYDAY, we will become closer to God and feel the presence of the Holy Ghost in our lives more strongly. I love you guys and hope you have a Great Week.

February 16, 2015 "I have learned that when we ask God for strength (or any attribute) He will give us opportunities to be strong."

¡Buenos D├Čas a todos! How is everything going? That is so exciting that Emily got her Mission Call! I am so excited for her. (Elder Hughes' cousin (they are 5 weeks apart)... just received her call to the Minneapolis, Minnesota Mission, Spanish Speaking. She leaves June 24th)
Well today for P-Day we went on a trip to the waterfalls that are about an hour away from Osorno. It was amazing and so beautiful.
This week has been good. We have finally set 3 of our investigators with baptismal dates!! They are doing well.. also we had been talking to two inactive members and they finally came to church after 8 years!!! We were able to assign their son (who has also been inactive) to bring them to church and they came!! It was so cool to see them there.
On Friday, we were talking with an older lady in the street. She told us that she could see in our eyes that we were happy and that she felt good while she was talking to us. Even though she didnt want us to stop by to talk more, we had a good conversation. People really do see a difference in us that it is visible to them. They can see the happiness that the gospel brings to us. It strengthened my testimony..
Also, this week has been challenge. I have learned that when we ask God for strength (or any attribute) He will give us opportunities to be strong. For example Thursday, I asked Heavenly Father to help`my be more diligent, and all throughout that day, I had a lot of oppurtunities to be diligent, or to choose to be lazy or slack off.. it was hard, but I know that Heavenly Father gives us challenges to become better and to learn for ourselves what we can do. I am grateful for the gospel and for all the challenges that I have to become better and to learn. I know that with God, all things are possible and that he will help us with the things that are important to us. Love you all and hope you have a great week.

"We had a trip today. The zones of Rahue (my zone) and Osorno went to the waterfalls. And our zone had shirts!!! W started out with doing a service project with the youth in our ward and then finished with a hike up to the falls. The trip was beautiful and amazing."

February 9, 2015 " A few people have asked me how they can prepare to go on a mission... and I have been thinking about that and I have a few suggestions."

Happy Valentines Day!
Well, the weather changed this week. it was cloudy and rainy a lot of the days. But is was a good break from the sun. Also, during this week, Rio Negro had a carnival for Rio Negro days or something like that. They had a huge stage set up in hte middle of the street and bands played during the week. We could hear it throughout most of the night because our house is close to where the stage was..... so we had a hard time sleeping.
Since almost all of our investigators are working all the time, we have been trying to visit the members and less active members to help them set goals to go to the temple and to at least have a current temple recommend. One young couple (who got baptized two years ago) are getting ready to go and be sealed with their 3 year old daughter. We are really excited for them. Also, we have been visiting a less active couple to help them set goals to go as well and to be sealed. They have now been activated and are coming to church everyweek now.. for people to go to the temple here, they have to save up a lot and sacrifice a lot to go and it is so awesoem to see the excitment and the faith they have to go to the temple..
A few people have asked me how they can prepare to go on a mission... and I have been thinking about that and I have a few suggestions..
  - first, to develop a habit of daily scripture study and daily prayer. Even thought they are the basic seminary answers, they are also the basic foundation to learning the gospel and to strengthen a testimony.Plus they are commandments of God and we receive blessings when we keep the commandments..
   - READ PREACH MY GOSPEL!!! even though every missionary has said that.... it is true. Use preach my gospel to teach lessons in church or to prepare talks or to do family home evening. An apostle said that there needs to be a PMG in every household. Because every member is a missionary. All need to learn how to share the gospel.
   - participate in seminary where you can learn the scriptures and dont just go to listen, but do the assignments and particpate.
   - teach lessons in church for sunday school or for YM and YW. You teach alot in the mission so you need to get rid of stage fright.
   - take charge of the FAmily Home Evening lesson..
   - share the gospel with your friends.. invite them to activities..
   - go out with the misisonaries.. ask them if you can prepare something to teach to the person.
   - do home teaching and visiting teaching.

Well these are some of the things that I have thought of.. even though they seem small and simlple, great things can result from them.. do them and I promise that it will help you. And it is not only for those who are close to leaving on a mssion, but even for the kids.. and for the adults who have gone on missions.. you should not have to step up to go on a mission. You should already be ``at that level``. you should already be ready..and not only for a mission, but for any calling, you should not have to step up.. you should already be ready.. love you guys and hope that you have a great week.

February 2, 2015 "I learned a good lesson... to always follow the Spirit."

How is everyone?? Hopefully everything is great!!
This week has been good. We werent able to teach any of our investigators because they had to work alot... why do people have to be so busy??  But we were able to give a blessing to Gimena. During work (she is working at the orchards to harvest fruit) she was picking fruit and a branch poked her in the eye really badly.. we ran into her later that day and she had something on covering her eye to help it heal.. we offered to give her a blessing and she agreed. So we gave her a blessing. She told us afterwards that she felt al ot better and also that she felt more peaceful.. the next day when we past by, she didnt have the eye patch on... I am so grateful for the power of the preisthood to help others feel better physically and spiritually and emotionally..
Our branch president suddnely got really sick and had to have surgery... and to make it ever more crazy he is getting married next week... so he is not doing to well.. so we have been trying to help him...
Wednesday, I went on exchanges with the zone leaders..... with Elder Thomas. He is from Santiago Chile, and I learned a lot about what I could do better.. he is a great misisonary and it was fun to be with him for a day.
Friday I had a funny and cool experience about following the Spirit.. we were walking in the street and we walked past a younger lady pushing a baby in a stroller.. when we past her I got the feeling that we should turn around and talk to her.. but I pushed it out of my head... for the next 45 seconds the thought would not leave my head.. finally i said to Elder Holt. That we should catch up to that lady and talk to her.. by this time, she was about 150 yards down the street. So we started running in order to catch up with her.. we caught up to her (she was probably a little suprised) and started talking to her about het plan of salvation.. she really like what we said and she was really interested, but she told us that she lives out in the country and was only visiting family... but even though we cant relaly follow up with that and teach her again. we left her with a pamphlet and we planted a really good seed.  And I left feeling good that I  had listened to the promptings of the Spirit.. what  a good feeling it was and I learned a good lesson... to always follow the Spirit.. I use to question myself when i got an impression to knock on a door and either no one answers or they dont want anything.. but Elder Holt told me that 3 reasons why you would receive an impression to do that is 1. because God is giving that person another chance to receive the gospel.. 2. because you need to slow down so that you run into someone later or 3. because God is testing you see if you obey and act on the promptings you get.... I have learned that it is important to listen to the Spirit because the Spirit will tell us what we need to do.. Moroni 10:5.. love you guys so much.. have a great week.
