Hey!! well I feel bad that you guys are dying of heat... 115 degrees.. I am sure that if it got that hot here, the people would die on the spot.. they think it is hot at 65 degrees.. This week there was a lot of rain.. Today was the first day this week without rain.. Sunday morning it rained like crazy before sacrament meeting so a lot of people didnt show up..
I went to Calbuco (a little town on the other side of puerto montt and it is a island.) to go on exchanges with Elder Hardy.
Every transfer we rotate from having zone conference and interviews with the president. This transfer we are doing interviews and instead of all the missionaries of the zone meeting at the stake center to do them, the president and the zone leaders and the wife of the president, are going to the houses of the missionaries to do house inspections and check the area book. President came to our house Thursday night and they brought my packages with them.. all went well (dont worry, our house was clean.. we try to clean it ecery week)..
We have been able to find a few new people this week. Tomorrow we have a lot of appointments with old contacts, so hopefully all turn into investigators,
his sunday we had branch conference. The branch of los muermos is part of the mission, President Obeso could come so his first councilor came. He is from Valdivia. His name is President Valeria. He came Saturday and we went out with us to invite less active members to the conference. Like i said, alot of people didnt come for the rain.. and it was really a lot of rain, we walked from our house to the "house" where we meet and i was soaking wet when we arrived, then we left again to pick up investigators, but they didnt answer us;(.. but we had an awesome day at church, two people received the Melchizedek priesthood,,
Today Elder Warner and i helped a man who is paralyzed from his chest down and cant move his arms either, to get out from his bed and put him in his wheel chair, we will be passing by daily to help him...
This week I have been focusing on using the spirit more when I teach instead of reciting the lesson to the investigators, i know that God knows what we need and we have his spirit to help us and guide us.. just as Alma did with his son Coriantumer to find out what worried him (Alma 40:1, 41:1, 42:1) we must help those under our responsibility by the spirit. i love you guys and also thanks for the Birthday wishes.. Love you so much,,

August 26, 2015 Elder Nathan Hughes is joined by his brother Elder Tyler Hughes as a full time missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints."

Our family drove to Provo, Utah Tuesday night, and then Wednesday afternoon, took Tyler to the Missionary Training Center in Provo.  It was a very bittersweet experience.  We are so excited for Tyler and all that he will experience...however, his absence in our home will be truly missed.  He said when walked into the MTC he wanted us to start singing George Straits song "This is where the cowboy rides away."  When we arrived home that night, we walked in the door and saw his cell phone sitting by the front door that he was handing down to his little sister, then we walked in his room and tripped over his cowboy boots, then I opened the fridge and saw some leftovers of his favorite meal he had cooked with Mathew Monday night........he has left a huge gaping hole in our hearts.  We will pray for him and all work on becoming better disciples of Christ as we strive to all step it up in order to bless our lives and the lives of each other.

"Tyler asked me to send him a favorite  quote of his Great Grandmother Eula Andrus, " Life is not a brief candle. It is a splendid torch that I want to make burn brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations."  ~George Bernard Shaw

Tyler requested Applebee's for lunch....we had a wonderful meal and a wonderful time during our last meal together.

Dad, Tyler, and Mom on our way to the MTC.....we didnt let him very far from us.

August 24, 2015 "Playing the piano in sacrament meeting, giving a talk, teaching Sunday School, and teaching the priesthood lesson. Also, learning about the following the course the scriptures set for us."

Well....sounds like the summer is gone up there in the US and that everyone is returning to school... here we are still in winter and hopefully summer comes quickly so that we don't die from so much rain and cold:)
This week we have had a lot of rain. (surprise surprise) truth is that I was a little stressed out this week, especially Sunday because I had to play the piano for sacrament meeting (and some were songs that I didn't know very well). I had to give a talk, teach the Sunday School class, and teach priesthood class. But as I entered the church (so that you know, we go early to turn on the gas heaters and prepare the sacrament) I felt a lot better and during the meetings I felt even more better. I love going to church and taking the sacrament and learning more about the gospel.  I love the gospel and all of the blessing that it offers us.
Something awesome that I learned this week.. as I was studying one morning in Alma 37:38-44. Alma explained to his son Helaman about the liahona and how it guided Lehi and Nephi and their family through the desert according ot their faith. But sadly, they didn't have sufficient faith and they murmured, so they wondered in the desert for 8 years without a direct course, if they had had the faith to follow the liahona, they would have gone straight to the ocean and not be in the desert for 8 years and suffer what they had to suffer.. as I read that I thought, how that applies to today, the liahona is like the scriptures and if we use faith and apply what they teach us, then we will be able to travel through the journey of life.. then I read the next verse and alms says the exact same thing.

45 And now say, is there not type in this thing? For just as surely as this director did bring our fathers, bfollowing its course, to the promised land, shall the words of Christ, if we follow their course, carry us beyond this vale of sorrow into far better land of promise.

(type means symbol... )  ii know that the scriptures help us and that if we follow their course, it will carry us beyond the valley of sorrow into a far better land of promise. I love you guys so much and wish you an awesome week..

August 17, 2015 " This week the days have been either really beautiful or really rainy... and freezing. Shoveling gravel, and finding wood for an investigator."

So congrats to those who are coming to an end of their summer vacation. Have a great last week ;)
So this week the days have been either really beautiful or really rainy... and freezing. We have had a lot of meetings this week and when we have meetings, we have to go to Puerto Montt, which is an hour away in bus..
One of our investigators, Mirta, has had a hard time, economically. She didn't have any wood left and wasn't going to receive money until the 9 of September. So she didn't have any way to heat her house or cook (image it like if we went to the cabin during the winter and we didn't have any wood, without snow because there is no snow here). So we had a good discussion outside the house because we couldn't enter with her alone, and we shared a few scriptures. Then the next day we talked with our ward mission leader. He and his dad donated some wood for her to use. She really appreciated it. As well we were grateful to the member and his dad for the donacion. Then, friday night all our appointments fell through, and as we turned the corner, we found Guillermo (one of our investigators). He had a huge pile of gravel that he had to move to the back of his house. So we jumped in and helped him... lets just say that I have not used a shovel for a long time and Sunday morning I was sore. And on top of that, it rained like crazy. We got to the house tired and soaking wet. Saturday we found a new investigator that is really receptive. Her name is Susana. we shared about the restoration and had an amazing lesson. Sunday we had a lesson with Guillermo.. he basically told us that he is catholic and that he wont be baptized in our church. We invited him to keep reading the Book of Mormon and to pray and ask God if it is true... it is sad to see people when the don't want to change and when the don't give us a chance to share what we treasure..
I love being here in the mission. regardless of the rain, the rejection, the tiredness, etc. I know that I have been called of God and that he wants me to succeed. and that he will help me. I love you guys so much and I hope that everything goes well..

With Love,
 Elder Hughes

August 10, 2015 "This week we have been trying to talk with everyone."

The first part of this week was rainy, then it started to get cold. This week we have cambios. Elder Warner and I will stay here together. Elder Ackerman (our district leader became zone leader and is going to Valdivia).
This week we have been trying to talk with everyone. Yesterday we found a lady (Claudia is her name) and she was really receptive. But the problem is that she goes to Puerto Montt everyday to study and work.,.. so we wont be able to pass by a lot.. also we were able to teach Juan and Joselin the restoration. And as we committed them to read and pray, we started to run into complications. Juan said that he will read 3 Nephi 11, but he doesnt want to pray... we tried and tried to help him understand why.. but he still wouldn't promise to do it. Joselin said that she doesn't want to read... but even thought they dont want to do it, we will still try and do what we can to help them. Saturday night we visited alot of less active members and sang a hymn to them and invited them to church, one of them actually came!! We were a little disapointed that the others didn't come, but we did what we could.. Sunday I taught the Sunday school lesson and I loved it.  Really, I have come to love the scriptures and we are studying the New Testament now. I love reading about the life of Christ and the church and I have realized that back in those times it was the same as now.  We must continue to fight and continue forward with a steadfastness in Christ and continue doing what is right regardless of what the world does. Sunday night we were knocking on doors and we found the parents of Joselin. They have two other kids. One that has 12 years and the other that has 4 years. When I saw them, they reminded me of Brock and Matt and I thought how blessed we are to have the Gospel in our lives. They don have the gospel and to see them as my little brothers I had a strong desire to share with them the gospel and to help them so that they can enjoy the blessings that we enjoy.
I love you all and I thank my Lord for the blessings that he has given me and I thank Him for his love and His patience with me. Regardless of my weaknesses, he is always trying to help me so that I can feel his love and so that I am happy. I know that God has given us the gospel so that we can be happy and have peace in this life and joy in the eternal life. It depends on us to apply the gospel to our lives and to shared it with others.  Have a wonderful week

August 3, 2015 Rain, Rain, Rain and finding treasures in Ether 12:27 and D&C 1:23-24

Hey!! Happy august to you all!! So the month of august here in the south of Chile is the worst month with the weather.. but and after that it starts to clear up and it doesn't rain as much. This week it has been raining a lot. So we have been able to find three new families to teach. We were able to find Juan and Joselyn again and we had a great lesson about the plan of salvacion. Juan remembered a lot and Joselyn really liked it. Towards the end of the lesson, the family of Joselin came in and it turns out that the mom of Joselin has talked to the missionaries before! e couldnt set an appointment to visit her, but it was cool to find her. We are going to visit Juan y Joselyn again this week on wednesday. We are also teaching the boyfriend of a daughter of a member (if that makes sense) and he is really receptive as well.We shared with him about the restoration and as we were talking about Joseph Smith the Spirit was there to testify and it was such an amazing experience. Then all of the sudden a bunch of their family barged in. It always happens like that. the Spirit is super strong, then satan sends a bunch of people to interrupt... but we were abler to finish it up..
Friday night a member had a Birthday party (he turned 18)and he is preparing to go on the mission. his family threw a huge barbecue (here they are called asados) and we stopped by to congratulate him... but all throughout the day it had been raining and we were soaking wet by the time we arrived there.  Sunday I played the piano and taught the sunday school class. Today for Pday all the missionaries in Puerto Montt got together and played ping pong and we had Dominos pizza (there is a dominos but really expensive. ) we didn't have nets for the ping pong table so we used toilet paper.. it worked!!
We also had our zone conference thursday (my second on e this cambio) and as President Obeso was reading a scripture i had an interesting experience.. the scriptures was Ether 12:27:
And if men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness. I give unto men weakness that they may be humble; and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me; for if they humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them....
Many times we focus on the last phrase, "I will make weak things become strong unto them".. but the first sentence caught my attention this time.. "if men come unto me, I will show unto them their weakness." ¿what will Christ show us if we come unto him? our weaknesses. ¿what happens if we come unto Christ? he will show us our weakness.. that is why it is hard to live the gospel. Because we see how weak we are and that we are not perfect. that is why so many people don't want to follow Christ. because he will show them their weaknesses.. It is natural to have weaknesses when we serve in callngs or to be a parent.. actually Christ says :

23 That the fullness of my gospel might be proclaimed by the weak and the simple unto the ends of the world, and before kings and rulers.
24 Behold, am God and have spoken it; these commandments are of me, and were given unto my servants in their weakness, after the manner of their languagethat they might come to understanding.  DyC 1:23-24

The fullness of the gospel will be proclaimed by the weak and the simple.... don't ever get down because of your weaknesses or failures, just keep moving forward with steadfastness in Christ. Love you guys so much and hope you have an awesome week!!

Love, Elder Hughes

July 27, 2015 " Lots of rain, getting settled into Los Muermos, and having my specific prayers bring specific blessings."

So the weather was a little crazy this week. We have had nonstop rain for the past week. My shoes have been soaking wet and there is a lot of water. Being in punta arenas I forgot how much it rains up here in the north..
So monday Elder Warner and I finished up cleaning the house. The Elders before didnt have a lot of investigators and the only two that they had, one lives outside the city and the other, they didnt leave an address or a phone number on her teaching record and they had no info whatsoever... so we have been doing a lot of contacts this week to try and find more people. luckily we were able to find one of them. Her name is Mirta. We were able to find her yesterday and we are going to talk to her again on Wednesday. The members here are really nice and have helped us a lot. Yesterday (sunday) I had to teach the sunday school class and played the piano.. there are about 40 people that come every week. We meet in a house  (next week I will send a  pic). Saturday we had an awesome experience. We had fasted thursday and friday and our district (an elder from my group) gave us the idea of setting an exact goal with the lord and then go and complete it. So we set a goal of how many people we were going to contact, We prayed and we set out to find them. We left at 300 and it was raining, and it kept raining until sunday morning. At about 8:30, we decided to knock on a door, We had almost completed with our goal.. and a guy (juan) answered. He told us to come in and as we stepped in we heard his "girlfriend" (joselin) say why did you let them in or something like that. We started talking and Juan told Joselin to come and sit down. She said, I am not mormon.. so we started talking with Juan and turns out that he is member and hasnt been to church for years., As we were talking Joselin came and sat down. They have two girls. One that is 4 and 1. The 4 year old was crying and I gave her a pic of the Salt Lake Temple. Joselin asked us about it and we talked about that. She really liked it, but we asked them if they would like to be together as a family forever.  They said no.. because they might separate and they dont want to be committed..or something like that... I was like. you have got to be kidding me.. but we had a good discussion and we set another appointment for the next sat. he works a lot so we will stop by sat. And he has had a bad experience with missionaries passing by everyday right at the time when he was trying to get ready for work. So we dont want to push him right now. But is was awesome to find that family and to see that god answered our prayer., specific prayers bring specific blessings. il ove you all and i know that the church is true and I love being on the mission. I am not perfect, but I have learned so much and I have changed a lot too. Love you! Have a great week!!!

July 20, 2015 Elder Hughes' younger brother Tyler, receives his mission call to Yakima, Washington!

Elder Tyler Hughes, called to serve in the Yakima, Washington Mission. He will enter the Provo, Utah Missionary Training Center on August 26th.  He will be Preach the Gospel in English.

Tylers' call arrived in the mail Monday morning on July 20, 2015.  We waited for the mail to come and then we left for a family reunion on Beaver Mountain.  Tyler opened his call with many close family members anxiously awaiting what his assignment would be around a campfire.   Tyler has 2 cousins called to serve in the Minneapolis, Minnesota mission and when he opened it, he read that he had been called to the same mission!JK
The Yakima, WA mission was just opened on July 1, 2015.
Tyler is thrilled to be preparing to serve the people of Washington!
He has a blog at

Aunts and cousins waiting with Tyler before he opened his call.

Tylers' cousin, Joshua came up to the reunion Monday with his family and left straight for the MTC Wednesday morning.  Nothing like a suit on the mountain! He will be serving in the Minneapolis,Minnesota Mission.  We love you Josh!

July 20, 2015 'Cambios!! Again! Surprise transfer!!!!

Greetings from Chile!!! So this week was really Good! First, we had zone conference on tuesday. It was so awesome. We talked a lot about faith, daily contact with the investigators, and with the missionaries as well. Presidente Obeso said " that faith is not necesarily a physical effort, but more of a mental effort".. it
helped me to focus myself more by thinking more of Christ and what he has done for me and what I can do to do better instead of thinking about something that doesn't have anything to do with what we are doing. Ones' thoughts are really important and eventually after time, thoughts turn into action. Afterwards, during lunch, president said to my companion that he should let me be like the senior companion for the week... I was thinking, "why does he want that"... but during the week we were able to find an old investigator and commit her to a baptismal date. She accepted and she is super receptive. We also were able to find a few other people who were old investigators and are receptive. Saturday we did a fast to help the investigators and to help us to find more poeple. Sunday after church, we found a less active member and she was really receptive. She is 24 years old and wants to go to the temple. She wants to come back to the church and start preparing to go to the temple. Then, sunday night,at 8:30pm,  as we were teaching an investigator in the chapel (actually it is a house.) we got a call from the AP. He told me that I was going to leave the next morning for Los Muermos. They were taking the two missionaries out and putting me with Elder Warner there. He told me that I was going to be senior comp too...  I had to pack my stuff that night and I had to be in Osorno at 9:00 in the morning. It was crazy.. Elder Albornoz was  a little upset because we were doing really well together and now that I get comfortable, I go to another place. So now I am in Los Muermos with Elder Warner, he is from Orem and only has one less cambio than I do. He is awesome and we are getting along. So now we have to figure everything out and start all over basically. The president of the branch and the first counselor came and helped us out. So we are settling in good. Also the house is a mess. So we are going to spend some time cleaning and figuring out the sector.. but i am excited. it is a little crazy with teh change nad the mess. but everything will work out.  also today it is really cold.... and really humid.. Love you guys so much and hope you have an awesome week!!
